Thanks to my dad, our whole family ran exclusively Linux computers during our growing up years. The corner of the office with his stash of Linux Format magazines was one of my favorite places to hole up and read.
He got me my first book on web development for my tenth birthday. It was a lot of fun to play around with, but the pieces didn’t really start fitting together for “how computers work” until I was about 12.
Incidentally, it was around this time that we upgraded the family computer to Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat).
The association of those two memories gives the aesthetic of Lucid Lynx/Maverick Meerkat with the newly released Ambiance theme a very strong association with “how computers should work” in my head. A comfortable, straightforward environment for exploring infinite possibilities. It’s a bit of an odd version to fixate on, as it was the last release before the GNOME 2 shell was replaced with Unity. But oh well.
I’ve been a web developer for more than a decade now, but I never managed to build more than a “coming soon” landing page for my personal website. I wanted it to be unique, but could never settle on a design direction. Instead, I just scattered experiments at random urls all over my domain without anything to tie them together.
I’m hoping that this time, I’ll be able to build something cohesive that ties the various things I’ve worked on together. Check out some of my projects using the Applications menu, if you’d like!
